  • Flow rate: Finer grinds slow down how quickly water passes through, extending brew time. Coarser grinds let water pass through more easily, shortening it.
  • Flavor impact: Because a finer grind exposes more surface area to the water, it pulls out a greater quantity of compounds overall, producing a stronger, more intense cup — but that also includes more of the coffee's less desirable compounds, which can taste bitter.
